About Kirribilli, and surrounding areas
Sticking out into Sydney Harbour on the northern side, Kirribilli sits right next to the Harbour Bridge and offers unbeatable harbour views. It has a pretty village-like atmosphere and is spectacular in November when the jacaranda trees are in full bloom. Kirribilli is the location of the Prime Minister’s Sydney residence as well as Admiralty House, the Governor-General’s residence.
The suburb has a thriving mix of cafes and restaurants, as well as the Kirribilli Hotel for pub classics. Stroll the fortnightly markets on a Saturday, browsing art, design and fashion-focused goodies, and pick up some artisan jewellery or clothing from a local vendor. Parking along the dining strip around Broughton Street can be tricky, so avoid this and aim instead for the residential streets a few minutes away or get the ferry across from Circular Quay.
THINGS TO SEE AND DO
-
Located a short three kilometres from Sydney’s central business district, Kirribilli is nestled on the harbour and labelled one of the city’s most coveted suburbs. The name Kirribilli is derived from the Aboriginal word Kiarabilli, which means ‘good fishing spot’. With the water’s edge accessible from several points in the area, it is just that for many Kirribilli locals. As one of the oldest areas in the country’s pseudo-capital, there is a lot to be found in a walk around Kirribilli.
-
Taronga Zoo is only a 15-minute drive or can be reached by a short ferry ride. The world-famous zoo is home to over 2,600 species and has many animals that are endemic to Australia.
-
Luna Park is an iconic venue in Sydney being both an amusement park and entertainment attraction. It has been open since 1935 and is a wonderful experience for the whole family.
-
If you asked around, you would find that many people have heard of Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden and some would have already been there and connected with it. It is not really a secret. It is actually one of the worst kept secrets in Sydney! It has been talked about on the radio, written about in the newspapers, viewed on countless web pages, featured on television and it gets numerous visitors from all over Australia and the World.
-
From sunrise on the wharf to breakfast at the iconic Balmoral Boatshed, stand up paddleboarding to bushwalking on the foreshore, you can have an active, nature-drenched, food-filled (and sun- safe) day all at once down at one of Sydney’s cleanest, most idyllic harbour beaches, Plus, it’s only a fifteen minute drive from Sydney’s CBD. Grab your sunnies, slip into some clothes that’ll protect that delicate skin of yours, slap a hat on your noggin and slop[ some SPF 30+ all over – it’s time to explore!
-
You're spoilt for choice when it comes to Manly Beach. Whether you want to spread a towel out and enjoy the soft white sand all day, surf its waves or explore its depths while snorkelling or diving, there's something for everyone. For those that prefer to look at it, it also makes a great backdrop for picnics or walking and cycle tracks.
Manly is where the world's first surfing contest was held in 1964, making it one of Australia's most famous beaches. The iconic beach curves from South Steyne to North Steyne and Queenscliff, where a submerged reef, or bombora, creates the waves that inspire the world's best surfers to travel to our shores.
RESTAURANTS & CAFES
Clove Lane
19 Clovelly Rd, Randwick NSW 2031
Full of all the charm of a welcoming neighbourhood gem, Clove Lane in Randwick is the local you wish was yours. It isn't fine dining or an overtly outrageous menu- it is more focused on a back to basics style that sources high-quality produce delivered with classic elegance. The open gallery style kitchen provides a theatrical backdrop to the modern dining space that is furnished with blonde timber and pendant lighting. If you take a look at the back there is an abundant chefs garden growing in bloom, and it doesn't get much fresher than that!
Sake
2 Argyle Street, The Rocks
Sydney’s Finest Japanese Restaurant The Rocks installation is undoubtedly the best in the city (and close to our home) and possibly the finest Japanese dining that Sydney has to offer.
This is thanks to head chef Chi Ung Kim’s notable experience with the cuisine. The Japanese grill here is world class, and we would recommend ordering anything from the grill
When it comes to dessert, they serve one of Sydney's most famous - the dragon egg (pictured here).
The Botanist
17 Willoughby St, Kirribilli
The site pays homage to Gerard Fothergill, a well-travelled pioneer in the study of plants and spices and their medicinal qualities. The Botanist has embraced Gerard’s legacy in the form of fine produce, exotic spices, the spirit of adventure and a thirst for knowledge, easily quenched with a well-poured Botanist gin, just as Gerard would have liked it.
Known in Kirribilli as the perfect “Sunday Sesh Spot”, we would highly recommend the Rosé Sangria as well as the Sunday Roast!!
Infuzions
17 Willoughby St, Kirribilli
The food is delicious and very well priced. Specialising in Asian fusion cuisine, inspired by the countries of South East Asia.
It’s a smart, stylish space with striped wooden walls and exposed brick. You’ll be transported to Thailand from the moment you arrive.
"Infuzions came together through a group of like – minded proprietors. The idea was to bring a new balance of Asian food to Cammeray offering an inspiring menu with innovative ideas, which doesn’t lean too far from the table. These four believe they couldn’t do what they do without the great team that has become family, working together to make magic happen every time the doors open."
Foys Kirribilli
76 McDougall Street Kirribilli 2061
Adam Marshall, formerly of the Bird and Bear in Elizabeth Bay, gave the 124-year-old Sydney Flying Squadron sailing club a facelift. The site is now home to Foys Kirribilli restaurant and the Flying Bear cafe.
The two eateries are split over two levels, both with waterfront views and open-air seating. Foys (named after the clubs’ founder, Mark Foy), is upstairs. It is Nordic- minimalist, with clean white lines and a selection of the club’s memorabilia on display.
The menu emphasises quality produce and invigorates dishes such as the lime-, cumin- and tequila- cured Tasmanian salmon (cured in-house) with crème fraiche and slivers of sourdough. There areshare plates of whole-roasted lemon sole; slow-roasted lamb shoulder; and cheese boards with house-made condiments, such as the fig jam or the apple and garlic puree. Classics include fish and chips and chicken schnitzel, and the banoffee dessert – a star on the menu, with textured banana bits, toffee paste and unsweetened cream.
San Antonio Sourdough Bakery
Holbrook Avenue, Kirribilli
Set in the scenic surroundings of Kirribilli wharf is Celsius Coffee Co., a speciality coffee shop and cafe — a place where brunch is taken just as seriously as the fresh brews which it punches out.
This intimate place is cosy and rustic in design with aged wooden furniture and the most waterside of waterside settings imaginable. Check out its Instagram account to be beguiled.
Thai Fusion
11 Broughton Street, Kirribilli
The best Thai Restaurant in Kirribilli
Thai Fusion has a menu to suit all kinds of occasions.
Founded by award-winning chef and restaurateur Srivilai Buddacharoen, Thai Fusion combines a unique blend of classical and innovative Thai cooking with traditional and western ingredients. Our timeless recipes have been passed down through generations and each specially crafted dish reveals a long culinary legacy of impeccable food and warm family service.
Small Bar
85 Willoughby Road, Crows Nest
This is the bar I met my partner in, so it’s extremely special to me.
This is the home of some of the Lower North Shores best cocktails! I would recommend the “Passionate Mexican” (tequila, alipus, mezcal, agave syrup, fresh passionfruit and lime).
They do a bunch of grazing boards as well. I would personally recommend the tacos board - it has a little bit of everything you could ever want!
Maggios Café & Bakery
457 Miller Street, Cammeray
Located in trendy Cammeray, Maggios is one of Sydney's best kept cafe secrets. Only known to the locals, it's a bustling cafe with Italian Heritage.
The bacon and egg burger is one of the best (make sure to add in the hashbrown option), and all their bread is baked next door in their bakery (please read my next suggestions below).
Just down the road at 463 Miller Street, Cammeray is Maggios Bakery.
Maggios Bakery is world class. Some of the freshest breads, pastries and cakes one could ask for.
The vanilla ricotta cheesecake is by far one of the best and yummiest cakes I have ever tasted, if you are addicted to it by the end of your trip, please accept my apologies! They also make fresh pizza slices in the afternoon! Perfect for kids!
Some of our other favourites from Maggios (perfect for taking back home) are:
The Soy Linseed Sourdough (to die for!)
Bomboloni Italian Doughnuts (go for the ricotta or pisascio).
Primavera - Layers of pistachio sponge, raspberry jelly and white chocolate mousse, finished with raspberry curd and fresh cream. Coated in pistachios and white chocolate.
Tartufo (White) - A delicious cake with layers of vanilla sponge centered with strawberries and chantilly cream. Finished with white Callebaut chocolate.
Green moustache
Rooftop, Level 10/100 Miller Street, North Sydney
North Sydney's first rooftop garden bar and restaurant.
It might be located right in the heart of North Sydney's buzzing city centre, but Green Moustache feels far from it. Instead, this fresh-faced bar and restaurant has embraced Mother Nature, and is filled with an abundance of greenery and plant life.
It's a well-executed lushness that's not all too surprising given this is the latest venture from Andrew Utiger and Matt Erby — the minds behind fellow North Sydney foliage den, Treehouse. Sporting primo rooftop views, the pair's new light-filled venue is destined to be a bar of choice for Sydneysiders looking for a warm and lush hideaway this winter.
The food menu runs from breakfast through dinner — six days a week. Mornings might mean the likes of haloumi-topped bruschetta with pesto or a loaded brekky bowl, while later visits promise caramelised sticky pork with shredded coconut and snake beans — or a pasta starring hand-picked blue swimmer crab, chilli and lemon. Those heading here in winter will find comfort in the scotch fillet paired with artichoke chips and duck fat-roasted potatoes.
San Antonio Sourdough Bakery
32 Burton Street, Kirribilli
With nearby neighbours like The Botanist and Batch Burgers and Espresso, Kirribilli is continually evolving into one of Sydney’s happening culinary spots. San Antonio Sourdough Bakery, situated discreetly along Burton Street, is no exception. The bare fit-out is splashed with a dash of deep red, with seating limited inside to a refurbished wooden bench while more tables speckle on the footpath.
The petite shopfront window rack is stacked with crafted golden loaves, some with lingering trails of potato and oregano, sesame and poppy seed, wholemeal spelt, olive and rosemary and for something sweet, fruit and nut. As the name suggests, sourdough is in focus here and as owner Tony Morgan explains “our sourdough is organic and yeast free, which is unlike any in Sydney. I read a lot and always like to keep coming up with something new.” Coffee uses beans by Morgan’s, and while you wait for your cup, don’t bypass the glass display of sweet tarts like lemon meringue, fruit or chocolate ganache.
Manly Pavillion
West Esplanade, Manly
With many 5-star reviews, you can’t go past this restaurant! First established in 1933, the heritage listed Manly Pavilion overlooks Manly Harbour and offers many layers of rich history.
‘This is a very beautiful restaurant with objects from the sea - large corals, shells etc. worth just going to look at those’.
‘... Great atmosphere and décor. The friendly staff are very attentive and make you feel welcome. A great spot to have dinner or just drinks with friends. Highly recommended’.
Sixpenny Restaurant
83 Percival Road, Stanmore
Perfect for special occasions
Even though the menu and wine is super expensive, this is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. My partner and I treat ourselves to one meal a year (usually for my birthday)!
If you are staying in our home for a special occasion, this is by far the best option in Sydney! Just make sure you book ahead, as there is usually a 3 month wait in order to get a reservation.
If they have their famous coffee bread made, make sure to ask for this. It’s honestly the best bread in the world!
OWNERS PICK!
Bamfords in Kirribilli
10 Fitzroy St, Kirribilli NSW 2061
Here are some reviews:
Stopped in this little gem for a quick drink before popping over the bridge. Fantastic service and great wine! Didn't need a snack, but it all smelled and looked delicious. Maria, the bartender was superb. Definitely recommend.
Great food, great drinks and a great atmosphere. Had a range of the share plates with friends and we couldn't fault any of them, the arancini balls were incredible! We will definitely be back!
